OsteoArthritis Saga…..begins

For the past 2 years I had pain in my knees but the pain would subside once I take a break from my farm activities.  I kept thinking I was brought up in the city and it is only in the past 12 years I have moved to a farm, hence my body is still not used to all the physical stress which is part and parcel for anyone working on the farm.

But then, during March my husband had a fall while working with the cow, and we took him to the hospital to make sure there were no fractures. While I was waiting for my husband to get his wound dressed, in passing I mentioned to the doctor that I had severe knee pain and could it be arthritis, bcoz for the past few weeks I have severe problem walking, driving, getting out of the car…

He advised me to get x-ray of both my knees and boom…it was right there glaring at me….I had severe arthritis….my left knee was worse than my right knee….

The in-charge orthopedic doctor asked me to come back after 2 days to meet the main doctor (Dr.Shivkumar). We scheduled an appointment and went to meet the doctor …. somewhere deep down my heart… i knew all was not well…due to the recent pain episodes I had been experiencing…

Another boom….boom….Doctor asked for a skyview of both my knees and the story of my knees got worse….the patella also showed signs of wear and distortion in alignment…

He advised Total Knee Replacement (TKR) for both my knees and told it would cost 2lakhs per knee and also promised that I could walk  within 8 days. I was also advised to do ASAP, before my right knee also gives in to OA degeneration.

It was hard to digest the fact I would have nature created bones in my body to be replaced by man-made steel or polymer or whatever is the latest and greatest innovation in knee replacement technology.

I agreed for TKR with both the doctor and my husband…but did I have the guts to go under the knife..

well of course I have the guts…but what I wanted was to know are there better options…do the doctors really have my interest in their mind…well it appears they are concerned about my pain….but somewhere I also felt that the orthopedic surgeon with a knife in his hand..would obviously suggest surgery…

so the search for alternatives began….
