Love is Not for People

Occasionally I confuse feelings and words and states of being for people, but I don’t fall in love with people only the concepts of them.

I fall in love with sadness
with tears and sorrow to wipe away
I fall in love with flattery
like Narcissus I drown my reflection
I fall in love with intimacy
the warmth of a fireplace melts me
down

I fall in love with sadness
deep unhappiness known only by the wise
I fall in love with flattery
pretty words rolling off a silver tongue
I fall in love with intimacy
fingers or legs interlaced and intertwined

I fall in love with sadness
crocodile tears welling in dishonest eyes
I fall in love with flattery
false image mirrored in vacant eyes
I fall in love with intimacy
shared breath knitting sinners together
