Jeremiah 17:9, A Deceitful Heart

Jeremiah 17:9 is a discouraging verse to read. Discouraging in the sense that it resolutely affirms the natural state of man. The natural state of man is to be disobedient, and averse, to the ways, and Word, of God. Jeremiah 17:9 states that the human heart is deceitful above all things. Per Strong’s Concordance the Hebrew word for deceitful can mean polluted, crooked, or fraudulent. But yet another definition, or application, provided points to the notion of swelling up. Think about that for a minute. To swell up implies that pride is at work in our lives. Pride is what causes us to rebel against the Lord. In pride, we assume our behavior is acceptable. In pride, we assume that our actions are justifiable. In pride, we assume that our desires are warranted, and right. All the while the ungodly heart swells up with ungodly ambitions and wants.

Jeremiah 17:9 outlines man’s default state: a spiritually sick life. With it carries a depraved mind and a selfish will. This underscores why we need supernatural aid from God. We need external assistance desperately. God is the great immortal Physician. In His healing plan Christ came forth, to eternally redeem us from the stigma of sin-stained hearts. To God be the glory. To Christ be the glory. To the Holy Spirit be the glory. The heart is deceitful above all things. It cannot be cured on its own. But there is a heavenly remedy, one that was made visible and available at Calvary.

Jeremiah 17:9 “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?” (NIV)
