How To Meditate Properly

Ok,   so, you’re probably a beginner if you’re looking here, but virtually everybody who begins meditating will at   some point wonder, sooner or later, if they are doing it right. Well I’ve kept all the information here simple   and practical for easy application, so let’s cover the basics of exactly how to meditate   properly.

1.   Posture

Sitting   up and keeping a straight back is usually best. At first it seems like a lot of effort when trying to relax, but   keeping your back straight actually places less stress on your spine, which will be more comfortable over the   duration of your meditation. It just takes a bit of getting used to. It also allows all your internal organs to   align in their correct positions, as opposed to sitting ‘hunched up’. But if you do find sitting up just too   uncomfortable then you can try laying down flat.

2.   Eyes

Your   eyes may be open or closed – different disciplines of meditation (e.g. Raja Yoga meditation, Zen meditation,   etc.) encourage one or the other but it is best if you try both and choose whichever you prefer. Or you can   alternate between the two at different times.

3.   Thoughts

When   learning how to meditate properly many people have concerns about what they should be thinking whilst meditating. It can be very hard to stop ones thoughts racing, let alone to think “nothing”, so what to do?! This confusion is perhaps one of the most common reasons that people stop meditating, but don’t let it stop you, because essentially it does not matter what you think; just “allow your thoughts to happen”. Thoughts will come and go; sometimes you can practice pushing them away and other times you can just try to ‘observe’ them.

4.   Daily Practice

The   most important thing to remember about how to meditate properly is to do it every day! You may not experience dramatic results right away (although if you use the meditation program mentioned above you’ll likely experience results more quickly) so it’s important to give yourself time to develop in the practice of meditation. Bear in mind the Advantages Of Meditation and remember that these will come with diligent practice over time. And I can assure you they are well worth the effort
