Getting used to new environment

Each of us have different ways to get used to a new environment. I want to share what I have been going through for the past 9 days at my new work and what I expect in the future. I will also share more things as I go on 🙂

I moved here to LA with full of excitement and expectation and it’s been almost two weeks at the new job.

I feel like I’m finally getting used to a new pattern of my life and work environment at FabFitFun. It is amazing to work in an office filled with full of the nicest and kindest people with a laid-back environment. Although I don’t take a full advantage of it yet, I can already tell that flexible hours and unlimited PTO will definitely help me be productive at work.

I wish I had

A predecessor to tell me everything about the product and how people work together. However in a startup environment, it has been fun to ask things around to different people and figure things out myself. I have learned a lot from doing it but still have so much to learn.

I love

Finding things to work on myself. I found myself enjoying this in past 9 days by auditing the website, seeing all the tools we use and setting things up for collaboration. This helps me to get an ownership of the product(the website) and gets me excited to plan things out that I can do to help make a better product.

What I expect

I’m still pursuing for the same goal that I have had for a long time, even before I started working here: Making a product that is enjoyable to use. I want to make our website enjoyable to use. First and foremost, I want to make it loads faster. This needs to be fixed for all the people who visit the site and people who work on the site. I expect to find a clear direction to make this happen soon.

Building a new site from scratch is actually what I still want to do because I know it is worth doing it. Although this won’t happen right away, I want to be ready for this when it comes. In order to do that, I need to understand more about the actual product(FabFitFun box in this case) and the industry. I know we can build an awesome website that offers good user experience and is visually attractive.

I’m very excited to see what we are going to build together and see how people will interact with it. Then we’ll keep improving things as we get more data and feedback.

One of the things I have focused on the most in past 9 days was to getting to know people at work. There were some awkward “I don’t know what to say next” moments and I gotta work harder to get rid of them 😉

Yes, I still feel very new and this doesn’t really feel like home yet. However, I’m so glad to have all of this experience in my life and learn things from it.

Thank you Laurie for the proofreading.
