Joking around in the office is something we did often. But what happens when the joke actually comes true???
Since the revelation that S was actually still with L when he had our “catch up”, the girls and I had been joking around saying “Wouldn’t it be funny if you had gotten pregnant” something I would soon realise would not be funny at all!
“I have a metallic taste in my mouth” I said one day only a couple weeks after my catch up with S. One of the girls Googled it. “oooooh that can be a symptom of pregnancy” she said. We laughed. It was only a few short days later on a Tuesday afternoon when I started to feel a little off. I went home from work early and grabbed a box of three pregnancy tests on the way home. I didn’t think I was pregnant but just wanted to rule it out. I took the test as soon as I got home. Negative! Thank God I thought! That would’ve been a very messy situation.
It got to the Friday morning and I realised my period was super later, it’s not really something I usually worry about because I’m generally quite irregular. I had big plans to go out that weekend so thought I still have the other two tests why not just do another. Still thinking I wouldn’t be pregnant I took the test. Straight away two pink lines showed up. SHIT IM PREGNANT!
I got ready and drove to work in a haze. I was still in complete shock.
When I got to my office I put my stuff down and immediately went looking for my office buddy D. “She’s going to kill me” I thought. D and her husband had been trying for a baby for a while and all the girls in the office kept getting pregnant, all except her. She had said to me “I’m next! Don’t you dare get pregnant or I’ll push you down the stairs!” She was joking by the way!
I found D in the kitchen making herself a cup of tea. I stood there and just stared at her unable to get the words out. “What’s wrong with you?” she said. “I’m pregnant” I finally replied. We stood there in our office kitchen just staring at each other for what seemed like years.
Throughout the day we would just turn to each other, stare then start laughing. We laughed and laughed as it was so ironic the one thing we had been joking about for weeks actually came true. We laughed because we knew if we didn’t, I’d crumble and cry.
The next day my cousin R came with me to the doctor and had it confirmed that I was in fact pregnant. Now came the hard part, to tell S. It was one of the hardest, nerve racking phone calls I have ever made.
He was out with his friends when I called. I told him he might want to step away from everyone while we talk. “I’m just calling to let you know that I’m pregnant” I said. He was silent. “I’m really sorry, I don’t know what else to say” I continued. “Shit” he replied. He then made some excuse and had to go and told me he’d talk to me later.
The next 9 months would be a rollercoaster of emotions. And it would be filled with more lies then you could ever EVER imagine..
