Why Fiona?

Fiona? As in; Shreks girlfriend?

Lately, I’ve been thinking about how we always hear about the sweet fairytale princesses that patiently wait for their prince to save them. Thinking about how I hate that concept of ‘being rescued’. I realised that of all the fairytale/story characters I identify most with Fiona, but only with the Fiona from Shrek 4. The Fiona that saves herself from her tower instead of waiting for a prince, because why wouldn’t you?

Waiting for a prince, that’s just not how life works. You cannot sit around and wait ’till life drops a prince at your doorstep to help you with the thing(s) you supposedly can’t do yourself.

I am so bothered by that idea. For as long as I can remember I have been taking care of myself emotion-wise. I experienced some heavy stuff in my life but I’ve always worked through it by myself not wanting to bother others with my problems (not always the healthiest option, but that’s just the way things went).

I saved myself from many towers and I continue to do so. I don’t need a prince to do that for me cause I’m well capable of doing that myself.

And as far as that prince goes… If there is one out there that’s fine with all this, he can hold my heels and cheer me one while I rescue myself from my next tower.
