Although it sounds like Day completely neglects and is indifferent towards Elsie, it might be his way of coping with the situation. We might be quick to judge him because he pays no attention to his daughter, and he hides her memory; but it might be all that he can do to avoid the pain. Day’s and Henrietta’s lack of education clearly had a large impact on and his hurt
