When Jeremiah was first called to be a prophet to Judah the Lord used an interesting illustration: an almond tree. An almond tree is sometimes known as the “wakeful tree” because it starts to bloom in winter, well before other trees. This comparison from a spiritual standpoint intimates that God is always ready to carry out His work, and plan. Even when it seems as though the Lord is dormant, or disconnected from earth’s activity, He is not. God is not blind. He is not slow to act. He is not powerless. No, He is capable. He is able. He continually longs to engage, and move. He preserves His mighty Word, and is always available to transform lives. It was true in Jeremiah’s time. It is true in our time as well.
Jeremiah 1:11-12 “The word of the Lord came to me: ‘What do you see, Jeremiah?’ ‘I see the branch of an almond tree,’ I replied. The Lord said to me, ‘You have seen correctly, for I am watching to see that my word is fulfilled.’” (NIV)
